The first step for any beginner is to obtain his/her learner permit. This involves three steps:
Eye-test Any qualified optician or your GP will be able to certify that you have a sufficient standard of vision in order to drive. (If you already wear glasses or contact lenses, the optician will certify that your current subscription is satisfactory.) The Driving theory test This involves a short multiple choice theory test. You can purchase a book or cd-rom containing sample questions at any good bookstore. To book the test, call 1890-606-106 or 1890-606-806 for an Irish language version. The application form Once you have successfully completed your theory test, you can bring your certificate along with your eye-test report to any garda station along with two signed passport photographs. You will be given a receipt and will be legally entitled to commence driving lessons straight away while waiting for your driver permit to arrive in the post.
